In the event that you or someone you love has endured complications after having one of these manufacturer’s or others’ hip implants, the experienced and knowledgeable staff at InjuryTN are ready to assist you in your legal matters. Those who have been affected by faulty hip implants may experience some of the following:

  • Difficulty walking
  • Pain or discomfort around the hips
  • Metal poisoning
  • The sensation of a dislocated hip

DePuy Hip Implant Recalls

In 2010, after more than 90,000 patients from around the world had received the faulty implants, DePuy Orthopedics recalled the ASR XL Acetubular & Resurfacing System. This recall came about following a U.K. national joint registry had uncovered the extensive failure rates of DePuy’s hip implants. Reports from DePuy claimed that 37,000 patients in the U.S. alone had received these defective implants, and British reports had indicated that more than 12% of these products had been faulty and required replacing.

Then, in what was deemed an abnormal action, the FDA mandated that all manufacturers of metal-on-metal implants for the hip were to place patients who had received their implants under careful observation so as to find out if these medical devices were indeed releasing metallic debris into the patient’s body, causing soft tissue damage.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration Intervenes

Hip implants similar to those which were manufactured by DePuy are specifically designed to replace patients’ ball-and-socket joints in the hips. These implants involve the use of a small metal ball fixed to a stem which acts as a replacement for the femur head. This ball will rotate inside of a metal-lined cup which replaces the natural socket. Metal parts which are often used in hip implants can wear down throughout the duration of its time inside the patient’s body, which often causes small particles of metal to disintegrate. These tiny particles of metal may result in the patient suffering severe damage to their joint and soft tissue around the implant, creating the possibility of an excruciating and disabling condition, as well as metal poisoning.

Those who have been the victim of complications caused by defective hip implants may need corrective surgery, and possibly even replacement implants. Studies regarding the 2010 DePuy hip implant recall have indicated that nearly 13% of all patients who had received the ASR XL hip implant had to undergo corrective surgery in less than 5 years.
